When I first imagined moving abroad as a mom, I wasn’t chasing a fantasy. I was chasing peace, security, and a chance to raise my daughters in a place where childhood still feels like childhood. I didn’t know exactly what life in Spain would look like, but now that I’m here, living in Alicante with my girls, I can honestly say it has been one of the most transformative decisions I’ve ever made.
Spain didn’t just meet my expectations. It expanded them.
And if you’ve ever wondered what life abroad could look like for you and your family, this may be the sign you’ve been waiting for. Read on!
1. Spain’s Visa Pathways Are Truly Accessible
I came to Spain on a student visa, and it worked beautifully for the transition. My plan is to switch to the autónomo (freelancer) visa, which is a real option here. Not a bureaucratic fantasy. Spain offers multiple pathways for normal, everyday people to build a stable life here, and the requirements are far more reasonable than what many other countries demand.
If you’re a mom looking for a smooth landing, Spain genuinely gives you room to breathe.
2. Public Schools That Actually Care About Children
My daughters are enrolled in a public school in Alicante. There are plenty of International school, but they are very expensive (about 800 Euros a month, per child) and your kids will barely learn Spanish, as most of them are British, and follow a Britich curriculum and school schedule, meaning, they don’t share the Spanish school schedule and your kids might be attending school when the local kids are off. The experience of having my girls in public school has been eye-opening. The curriculum is strong, but what stands out most is the humanity.
Their teachers are:
- patient
- empathetic
- trained specifically to support expat kids
- understanding of the emotional ups and downs of transition
My kids aren’t treated like outsiders by their teachers. They’re seen, supported, and welcomed.
As a mom, that alone feels priceless.
3. Alicante: A Coastal Paradise That Feels Like Home
Alicante has my heart. It’s magnificent without trying too hard.
We live just two blocks from the Marina and a short walk from the beach. When we arrived in the summer, we spent our weekends hopping on the tram and discovering a new beach every time. There are few things more healing than salt water, sunshine, and an easy coastal rhythm.
And the best part?
Alicante is expat-friendly in a genuine, warmhearted way. The language barrier is softer here, which makes everyday life more manageable and far less stressful than in other regions.
4. Life’s Essentials Are Surprisingly Easy
I expected headaches. And sure, Spain has bureaucracy, we’ll get to that! But surprisingly, some things were refreshingly simple:
- Setting up internet: easy.
- Getting a phone plan: easy.
- Joining a gym: affordable (290 euros for six months!) and straightforward.
Spain removes stress in places where you’re used to having it, which adds up quickly to a calmer daily life.
But let’s not kid ourselves, opening a non-resident bank account and moving money abroad was a challenge. Have a little laugh on my behalf. I made a whole TikTok post about it: HERE. My take: open an online bank account with a Spanish IBAN at first. Good luck! lol
5. The Food Alone Could Convert Anyone
The food in Spain deserves its own section.
Fresh. Seasonal. Flavorful.
No GMO nonsense. No artificial dyes. No chemicals you can’t pronounce.
Going to the Mercado Central de Alicante became one of our weekly rituals. I’m now a familiar face there. The vendors give me recommendations, let me sample new foods, and treat me like a neighbor, not a stranger.
Alicante was recently named the culinary capital of Spain, and honestly? It’s deserved. Every meal tastes like it was made with intention.
6. A Lifestyle That Prioritizes Family, Community, and Joy
This is the part of Spain that sneaks up on you — and changes you.
Here, the pace of life is slower in the best way. Children are everywhere, playing, laughing, just being kids. Parents socialize at playgrounds. Weekends revolve around family. Bars are lively but never chaotic; people drink to enjoy life, not to escape it.
If you crave a sense of belonging and community, Spain gives it freely.
7. Healthcare That Actually Feels Like Healthcare
Spanish healthcare is, without exaggeration, the best I’ve ever experienced.
Doctors:
- take their time
- ask questions
- actually examine your children
- explain what’s happening
- treat you like a human, not a chart
And everything is organized, professional, and shockingly efficient.
It feels like what healthcare used to be in the U.S. before profit took priority over people.
8. Walkability That Becomes a New Kind of Freedom
I’ll be honest: transitioning to a walking lifestyle was an adjustment. But now? I love it.
Not only is it healthier, but it also changes the way you experience your city. You slow down. You notice things. You move your body without forcing yourself into a gym.
And fast food doesn’t dominate every corner. Which explains why I haven’t seen a single McDonald’s ad on TV since arriving.
9. Let’s Be Real — Spain Isn’t Perfect
Every country has its challenges, and Spain is no exception.
- The far-right movement is concerning.
- Bureaucracy can be painfully slow.
- Realtors may not respond.
- Contractors may disappear for days.
But the positives outweigh the frustrations — if you come with the right mindset.
If you arrive expecting Spain to cater to you, refusing to learn the language or integrate, you’ll struggle. You’ll be the “bad expat story” people talk about.
But if you come with humility and openness, wanting to contribute, adapt, and be part of the community, Spain and it’s people has a way of opening themselves to you.
10. And That’s Why We Love It Here
Spain gave my family peace. Safety. Belonging. Adventure.
It gave us connection to people, to community, to ourselves.
It reminded me that life doesn’t have to be hard, difficult, disheartening, stressful, rushed, or chaotic to be meaningful. The hustle culture is not sustainable and eventually, you burn out.
If you’ve ever felt the pull toward living abroad… if you’ve ever wondered what life could look like somewhere else… if you’ve ever dreamed of giving your kids a different kind of childhood…
Spain might be exactly what you’re looking for. That’s why I post so many updates and everyday mom abroad content on my social media. I want to show other moms they can do it too.
And if you’re curious about how to make the move, I’m here to help you explore every option, because if Spain can change your life even a fraction as much as it changed mine, it will be worth every step.
Cheers, mama! xoxo
