Moving to Spain With Kids: Why We Left the U.S. and What I Wish I Knew Before Moving Abroad

Moving to Spain With Kids: Why We Left the U.S. and What I Wish I Knew Before Moving Abroad

Wanting a safer, softer life for your children is a mother’s natural instinct. But taking that vision and actually packing up your family, securing visas, and building a global income? That takes a real plan.

I moved my two daughters to Spain to claim the peace of mind we deserved, and I built the exact framework I wish I had when I was starting from scratch.

Whether you need the proven roadmap in my Moving Abroad with Kinds Blueprint or personal guidance through a 1-on-1 Strategy Call, this post is designed to take you from overwhelmed to empowered.

Most of us knew what the slogan meant, but none of us actually believed it would happen. The Project 2025 Blueprint told us exactly how things would unfold, but no one could fathom that an authoritarian regime would ever be able to succeed in the United States of America. Ever!

If you’re reading this late at night with a knot in your stomach, scrolling through news headlines and wondering how on earth you’re going to raise happy, safe children, and healthy children, in the current U.S. political and social climate, take a deep breath!

According to a recent study, approximately 25% of Americans express a desire to move abroad permanently.

You are not alone. And most importantly, you have options.

Recently, I shared a quick Instagram carousel about why I packed up our lives and left the United States with my two young daughters. Within hours, that carousel blew up to over 5,000 views and hundreds of shares. My inbox flooded with messages from moms, especially fellow Black moms, asking the exact same question:

“How did you actually do it? How did you move abroad with kids, leave the U.S. behind, and create a sustainable income in Europe?”

I wrote this for them.

As a mom who made her own “Blaxit” to Spain after a painful divorce, the corporate DEI dismantling, and pure exhaustion from gun violence and political hostility, I know the terrifying feeling of standing at the edge of a huge life decision.

Moving abroad isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay. But if you are tired of swimming upstream against a system and culture that discount your hard work and disrupt your peace of mind on a daily basis, leaving the U.S. might be the most powerful move you ever make. Take it from someone who did it.

Consider this your step-by-step, warm, empathetic, “mom-friend” roadmap for moving abroad with kids, protecting your family’s peace, and creating location-independent income so you can thrive anywhere in the world.

The Red Flags: Why I Chose Leaving the USA Over “Resilience”

When the red flags of increased segregation, overt racism, and systemic rollback began waving loudly during the 2024 campaign trail, the writing wasn’t just on the wall; it was flashing in neon.

As a Black woman raising two little girls, my absolute highest priority is protection.

Watching the U.S. political landscape shift toward open racism, seeing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives systematically dismantled, tracking hyper-aggressive ICE enforcement, and confronting the relentless, terrifying reality of active shooter drills and metal detectors in schools, made one thing painfully clear: the regression was inevitable.

I decided right then that I refused to let my daughters inherit a system that actively fights against their humanity. I was tired of being praised for being “resilient.” I was exhausted!

I don’t want my daughters’ greatest life skill to be surviving systemic trauma before they even learn algebra. I want them to just be kids.

So, after a good cry on election night and a much-needed mental health day on a quiet Staten Island beach, I stopped waiting for things to improve magically. I made a financial plan, researched countries and legal pathways, packed our lives, and chose self-determination. Today, we proudly call Spain our home.

Moving to Spain with Kids: What Life Looks Like on the Other Side

When people hear about moving abroad with family, they often assume you must hate America. I don’t. America is where I was raised from age 7, where I built my degree, where I fell in love, got married, and where my daughters were born.

Leaving doesn’t mean you hate where you came from; it means you’ve outgrown a system that no longer supports your family’s well-being.

What Changes When You Raise Kids Abroad in Spain:

  • True Physical Safety: Gun violence is virtually non-existent. My children go to school without active shooter drills, and I walk down the street at night without checking over my shoulder.
  • Affordable, World-Class Healthcare: You don’t have to choose between a doctor’s visit and paying rent. Quality private healthcare in Spain is a fraction of U.S. prices.
  • Family-Centric Culture: In Spain, children are welcomed everywhere. The culture prioritizes family, slow living, community, and outdoor connection.
  • Lower Cost of Living: High-quality food, fresh produce, extracurricular activities, and housing cost significantly less than in major U.S. metro cities like Jersey City.

The Ultimate Barrier: “How Do I Earn Money Abroad?”

The #1 question moms ask when considering raising kids abroad or moving to Europe is: “How do I fund this life without a huge financial cushion?”

When I first started looking into Americans in Spain and expat life abroad, I felt overwhelmed by confusing visa requirements and financial jargon. But as moms, we pivot. We adapt. We find a way.

You do not need tens of thousands of dollars in savings to start building a global life.

Here are three location-independent income solutions you can launch today for free or under $100 to power your move abroad.

Solution 1: High-Ticket Digital Services & Freelance (Cost: $0)

If you have administrative skills, writing ability, social media experience, project management, AI automation, or marketing experience from your corporate life, you already have global income potential.

  • How It Works: Offer specialized remote services (Virtual Assistance, Copywriting, Social Media Management, Bookkeeping) to U.S.-based business owners while living in a lower-cost country like Greece, Albania, Uruguay, Portugal, or Spain.
  • Why It Works for Moms: You set your own hours, charge in USD (which goes further in many countries), and can work while your kids are in school.
  • How to Start Today for $0:
    1. Audit your top 3 professional strengths.
    2. Create a clean portfolio using a free Canva account.
    3. Set up profiles on free platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, or LinkedIn and begin pitching business owners directly.

Solution 2: Digital Products & Content Monetization (Cost: ~$10–$30)

As a mom moving abroad, your journey itself is valuable intellectual property. That’s how you found me! Other moms want someone who’s gone through it to help; knowledge and lived experience are powerful.

Document your journey, knowledge, or expertise, and charge for guidance, roadmaps, templates, and encouragement.

  • How It Works: Package your knowledge into downloadable guides, e-books, printable planners, or mini-courses.
  • Why It Works for Moms: It’s passive income. Once created, a digital product can sell over and over while you spend time exploring Spain with your daughters.
  • How to Start Today for Under $30:
    1. Choose a niche topic (e.g., “Budget Meal Planning for Families,” “Remote Admin Checklists,” or “Homeschool Guides”).
    2. Write and design your guide using free Canva templates.
    3. Open a digital shop on StanStore (Start your 14-day free trial here), which is what I use, Gumroad (Free to list), or Etsy (under $10 for initial listing fees and a custom domain name).

Solution 3: Remote Micro-Consulting & Online Coaching (Cost: ~$20–$50)

You don’t need a fancy certification to help someone who is two steps behind you on a path you’ve already walked.

  • How It Works: Offer 45-minute 1-on-1 strategy sessions helping clients with career pivots, organizational planning, language practice, or specialized consulting.
  • Why It Works for Moms: It requires zero inventory, low startup overhead, and immediate payouts.
  • How to Start Today for Under $50:
    1. Set up a free appointment scheduling link using Calendly.
    2. Connect a free payment processor through Stripe or PayPal.
    3. Use Zoom or Google Meet for calls.
    4. Spend ~$20–$30 securing a professional domain name and Google Workspace email to build trust.

Step-by-Step Transition Strategy: From Surviving to Thriving Abroad

Transitioning your family to a life in Spain or Europe doesn’t happen overnight, but it does happen with a structured plan:

  1. Step 1: Choose Your Country and Visa Pathway. Research popular options like the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) (for those with remote passive income/savings) or the Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) (for remote workers/freelancers).
  2. Step 2: Start Your Remote Income Stream. Launch one of the low-cost income ideas above to build consistent location-independent cash flow.
  3. Step 3: Downsize and Audit Your Expenses. Audit your current monthly spending and begin building a relocation fund.
  4. Step 4: Connect with Expat Mom Communities. You do not have to do this without a village. Surround yourself with women who have successfully made the move.

You Don’t Have to Wait for a System to Value You

Difficult circumstances are just moments in time; they do not define who you are or where your family ends up. As Black women and mothers, we have always been deeply resourceful, fiercely protective, and entirely capable.

If you’ve been searching late at night for a sign to prioritize your peace, your safety, and your children’s future, let this be your sign.

You don’t have to settle for surviving when global options are waiting for you. Step into your power, build your strategy, and choose a life where peace is non-negotiable.

What I Wish I Knew Before We Left: Healing the Survival State

If I could sit down with the version of myself that was packing boxes with a knot in her stomach, panicked about logistics, I would tell her this:

I wish I had known how long it takes to stop bracing for impact.

When you’ve spent a lifetime navigating systemic pressure, hyper-vigilance, and the quiet background radiation of fear—fear for your safety, your children at school, your peace – surviving becomes your baseline. You get so good at carrying the weight that you don’t even notice your shoulders are permanently up around your ears.

When we landed in Spain, I spent the first few months waiting for the other shoe to drop.

  • When my daughters laughed loudly in public, I caught myself tensing up, conditioned to protect them from judgment.
  • When I heard a loud noise in a crowded plaza, my heart rate spiked automatically.
  • When we walked through our neighborhood at dusk, my mind kept running threat assessments that were no longer necessary.

What no one tells you about moving abroad with kids is that leaving the country is only half the journey; the other half is learning how to finally feel safe enough to exhale.

Spain didn’t just give my daughters a safer environment; it gave me permission to stop being a soldier and start being present as a mother. I wish I had known that the hardest thing I’d have to pack wasn’t our luggage, but the invisible armor I’d worn for decades.

If you are standing on the edge of this decision, know this: the transition isn’t just about changing your zip code. It’s about reclaiming your nervous system, your joy, and your family’s right to peace.

You don’t have to carry the weight alone anymore. When you’re ready to lay the armor down, the world is waiting for you.
