How Systems, AI, and Online Income Helped Me Move Abroad With My Daughters

How Systems, AI, and Online Income Helped Me Move Abroad With My Daughters

I’m all for the workforce. There’s value in building a career, gaining experience, and contributing to something larger than yourself. I myself worked in corporate America for years.

But when the workforce stops honoring its side of the bargain, and years of loyalty, hard work, and dedication still leave people struggling financially, and layoff announcements become a regular part of the news cycle, it’s no surprise that more and more Americans are exploring entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship isn’t just about making more money. It’s about creating security, flexibility, and ownership in an increasingly uncertain world. And for those dreaming of traveling more, working remotely, or even moving abroad, building a location-independent income has become more than an aspiration; it’s become a practical path to freedom.

That’s exactly what led me down this road.

I started a business before leaving the US, and quickly realized I was running it as a one-woman show on Broadway. Awkward! lol

Unfortunately, I had started my business a few months before my move, and when applying for a visa, I quickly found out that to be self-employed on the Digital Nomad Visa in Spain, your company has to be active for at least 12 months. This is why I went to the Student Visa route, because we have to be resourceful and adapt.

Fortunately, thanks to the income my company generates, I had the funds for the move and was able to enroll in school and cover our expenses in Spain today.

I must admit, though, even with the best plan, there comes a point in almost every one-person business where you realize something uncomfortable:

You are the business.

If you stop posting, the leads slow down. If you stop replying, the sales pause. If you stop creating, everything gets quiet.

That’s not freedom. That’s a job with extra anxiety.

And for a long time, that’s exactly how I was operating.

As a mom, trying to rebuild my life, move abroad, create financial freedom, raise my daughters, grow multiple income streams, and somehow still remember to defrost chicken for dinner… I was running on hustle and caffeine.

Cute for a minute. Terrible long-term.

Especially after moving to Spain. One of the main reasons for the move was a slower pace and better quality of life.

Because here’s the reality nobody talks about enough:

When you move abroad with kids, you don’t magically become stress-free sipping sangria on a balcony while your passive income rolls in.

You still need to make money. You still need consistency. You still need systems.

The difference is… now the stakes feel bigger. The gamble could have real consequences.

You’re building stability in another country. You’re trying to create a life your kids can thrive in. And suddenly “winging it” starts feeling really reckless.

That’s when I realized something that changed the way I approached my business forever:

Systems are what make small businesses look powerful.

Not the logo. Not the fancy Canva graphics. Not pretending to be “fully booked.”

Systems.

The average solopreneur is operating like a stressed-out freelancer. The businesses making real money are operating like machines.

And the crazy part?

Most of those businesses are not smarter than you. They’re just more organized.

The Problem Most Mompreneurs Actually Have

Most women do not have an ambition problem.

They have a systems problem.

You don’t need more motivation. You need:

  • Better workflows
  • Better follow-up systems
  • Better lead management
  • Better content systems
  • Better automation
  • Better time protection
  • Better client onboarding
  • Better boundaries

Because when everything depends on your memory, energy, or mood… your business becomes unstable.

And honestly? That instability was exhausting. I still run social media myself to keep it genuine and personal, but as I write this, I think I should also include my social media management in my workflows.

Managing it all is a lot. Especially for women already carrying the mental load of motherhood, work, relationships, household management, and trying to survive in an economy that constantly reminds us that jobs are not guaranteed.

A lot of Black women right now are quietly being pushed into entrepreneurship.

Not because it was always the dream. But because of layoffs, burnout, underpayment, lack of flexibility, and unstable corporate environments, are forcing a pivot.

And if that’s you, I need you to hear this:

You do not need to build a million-dollar company overnight.

But you do need to build something sustainable.

That starts with systems.

The Moment I Knew I Needed Automation

I hit a point where I realized I was doing way too much manually.

I was:

  • Responding to the same DMs repeatedly
  • Forgetting follow-ups
  • Writing captions from scratch every day
  • Sending onboarding info manually
  • Trying to remember content ideas randomly throughout the day
  • Losing leads because I didn’t respond fast enough
  • Spending more time organizing my business than growing it

Meanwhile, bigger businesses had systems handling all of this behind the scenes.

And that’s when it clicked:

The reason corporations scale isn’t because their CEO works harder.

It’s because they create processes that work without constant human effort.

That’s when I became obsessed with learning:

  • AI tools
  • Automations
  • CRM systems
  • Content workflows
  • Lead generation systems
  • Email funnels
  • Scheduling systems
  • Client onboarding systems
  • Digital product ecosystems

Not because I wanted to “sound techy.”

But because I wanted my business to stop depending on me being online 24/7.

I know You Don’t Want to Hear This:AI Is the Equalizer Nobody Should Ignore

Let’s be honest.

A lot of people hate the concept and are scared of AI.

But the people who learn how to use it strategically are going to move faster than everyone else. That’s a fact.

Especially small businesses.

AI gives regular people access to leverage that used to require:

  • A team
  • A copywriter
  • An assistant
  • A marketing department
  • A strategist
  • A customer service rep
  • A social media manager

Now?

One focused person with systems can compete in ways that were impossible five years ago.

That doesn’t mean AI replaces human connection.

It means AI removes unnecessary friction.

Here are just a few ways solopreneurs can use AI right now:

Content Creation

Use AI to:

  • Brainstorm content ideas
  • Repurpose long videos into short clips
  • Create captions faster
  • Write email drafts
  • Organize content calendars
  • Create lead magnets

Customer Experience

Use automations to:

  • Instantly reply to inquiries
  • Deliver freebies automatically
  • Send onboarding emails
  • Schedule consultations
  • Follow up with leads

Productivity

Use systems to:

  • Organize your week
  • Batch content
  • Track leads
  • Manage projects
  • Automate repetitive tasks

Sales

Use funnels and email sequences to:

  • Nurture leads while you sleep
  • Sell digital products automatically
  • Build recurring monthly income

That’s the part people keep missing.

The goal is not to work harder. The goal is to stop rebuilding your business from scratch every single week.

The Solopreneur Trap Nobody Warns You About

Here’s the trap:

A lot of people become solopreneurs and accidentally build themselves another exhausting full-time job.

No boundaries. No systems. No recurring income. No automation. No structure.

Just vibes and panic.

And listen… I say that with love because I lived it.

But eventually, you realize:

Freedom is not just making money online. Freedom is building something that still works when you log off.

What Helped Me Start Operating Like a Real Business

These are some of the biggest shifts that changed everything for me:

1. I Stopped Treating My Business Like Random Creativity

Creativity matters. But consistency gets you paid.

I created systems for:

  • Content pillars
  • Weekly planning
  • Client workflows
  • Follow-up sequences
  • Offer positioning

Instead of waking up every morning asking: “What should I do today?”

I started operating from repeatable systems.

This reduced decision fatigue massively.

2. I Focused on Building Assets

Posts disappear. Assets compound.

That means:

  • Email lists
  • SEO blog posts
  • Lead magnets
  • Systems
  • Funnels
  • Automated nurture sequences

This is why I’m such a huge believer in newsletters and subscriptions now.

Because relying ONLY on social media is dangerous.

One algorithm shift and suddenly your visibility drops overnight.

But owning your audience? That changes everything.

3. I Built Around My Actual Life

Not some fake “CEO morning routine” where I wake up at 4:12 AM to journal beside a candle while my children magically parent themselves.

I built systems around reality.

School schedules. Time zones. Client calls. Energy levels. Motherhood. Moving abroad.

Because sustainable businesses are built around real life, not performance.

Why This Matters More Than Ever Right Now

We are entering a time where adaptability matters more than titles.

The people who survive economically are going to be the people who learn how to:

  • Build online income
  • Create leverage
  • Use technology strategically
  • Monetize skills
  • Build audiences
  • Create systems
  • Diversify income streams

And I especially want Black women to understand this.

Because too many brilliant women are underpaid, overlooked, exhausted, and overqualified.

Your ability to create income online may literally become the thing that changes your family’s trajectory.

Not overnight. Not magically.

But strategically.

And strategy beats hustle long-term every single time.

The Bigger Vision

Moving to Spain with my daughters forced me to think differently.

I didn’t just want “more money.”

I wanted:

  • More freedom
  • More peace
  • More time with my kids
  • More flexibility
  • More ownership
  • More stability
  • More options

And building systems into my business is a huge part of what helps make this life possible.

The income isn’t coming from chaos anymore.

It’s coming from the structure.

From assets. From positioning. From automation. From learning how to make a small business operate intelligently.

That’s the shift.

A Few Systems You Can Set Up This Week

If you’re overwhelmed, start here:

Simple System #1: Create 3 Core Content Pillars

Stop posting random things.

Choose 3 themes your audience cares about.

Example:

  • Education
  • Personal story
  • Solution-based content

Now rotate them weekly.

Instant clarity.

Simple System #2: Automate Your Lead Capture

Create:

  • A simple landing page
  • A freebie
  • An email welcome sequence

Now your audience has somewhere to go besides your DMs.

Simple System #3: Batch Your Content

One focused day of content creation can produce:

  • 7 short videos
  • 10 captions
  • 1 newsletter
  • Multiple email ideas

Stop forcing yourself to create daily from scratch.

Simple System #4: Use AI as an Assistant, Not a Replacement!

Use AI to speed up:

  • Research
  • Drafting
  • Organizing
  • Repurposing
  • Brainstorming

But keep your voice human. People still connect to your authentic voice.

Final Thoughts

The women who learn how to combine:

  • Personal branding
  • Automation
  • AI
  • Digital products
  • Community
  • Strategy

…are going to create opportunities most people won’t understand until years later.

And honestly?

That might be the real flex.

Not looking rich online.

But quietly building a life where your kids are safe, your bills are covered, your freedom increases, and your business no longer depends on you running yourself into the ground.

That’s the kind of success I’m interested in.

And if you’re building toward that too, you’re in the right place.
