Moving Abroad with Kids – International Travel Must-Haves with Packing Checklist

Moving abroad with kids requires a mix of essential documents, travel-friendly items, and comfort objects to make the transition smoother. Key must-haves include all necessary documents like passports and birth certificates, entertainment for the journey such as tablets and books, and comfort items like favorite stuffed animals and blankets. Packing essentials in carry-on bags, using packing cubes, and preparing kids emotionally are also crucial for success.

Documents and organization

  • Important documents: Keep passports, birth certificates, immunization records, school report cards, ID’s, driver’s licenses, and travel insurance information organized in a carry-on. Make digital and physical copies. If you are divorced, like me, or a single mom traveling alone without the other parent, keep in mind that many countries request a parenting or travel agreement. I brought my divorce decree translated and apostilled, which states my full custody, but because there was a visitation clause in the agreement, they requested a letter from the father stating he allowed the girls to travel with me to Spain and I had his full permission to make legal and medical decisions while in Spain. This was notarized, and translated, and submitted along with a copy of his Passport for the empadronamiento (padron) and school registration. Have this ready before you leave the U.S. even if you have full custody. If the other parent is not involved in your children’s life, you can state this and show your tax returns, where they are your dependents. They are very strict about this in Europe. Be prepared!
  • Travel document holder: Use a dedicated holder to keep all paperwork safe and easily accessible.
  • Confirmation numbers: Have confirmation numbers for flights, hotels, and rental cars readily available. You will be overwhelmed, and stressed, so make this as easy on yoursel as possible.

For the journey

  • Electronics: Bring tablets with headphones, portable chargers, and downloaded games, movies, or educational apps to provide screen time entertainment on flights.
  • Entertainment: Pack a variety of activities like coloring books, pencils, small toys, and travel-sized board games.
  • Comfort items: A favorite stuffed animal, a special blanket, or a pacifier and clip can provide a sense of security.
  • Snacks and drinks: Pack familiar snacks and a refillable drink cup with a lid to avoid meltdowns and save money.
  • Comfortable clothing: Bring zip-up hoodies and neck pillows for everyone to ensure comfort during the flight.
  • Extra clothes: Pack a spare outfit for each child in your carry-on in case of spills or accidents.

Health and personal care

  • Medications: Pack any necessary prescription medications and over-the-counter remedies for things like motion sickness. I stocked up on cold, allergy, and ibuprofen medicine and vitamins.
  • Toiletries: Bring a small supply of essential toiletries, including baby wipes, which are useful for cleaning hands, faces, and messes.
  • First-aid kit: A basic first-aid kit with a few essentials can be very useful.
  • Child-specific items: For babies, include diapers, wipes, diaper cream, and a portable changing pad.

Before you go

  • Start early: Begin packing and planning well in advance to avoid last-minute stress.
  • Involve the kids: Let children help pack their own bags to give them a sense of control and make them feel more involved in the process.
  • Research the destination: Familiarize your children with their new country by looking at pictures, reading books, and discussing what to expect.
  • Maintain routines: Stick to familiar routines like bedtime stories to provide stability during the transition

Hi, I’m Violet!

I’m a divorced mom of two from New York City (who moved from New Jersey) living in Spain and thriving with my two daughters, who were 5 and 10 at the time of our move

I am the proud founder of YourMomFriendV.com, which started as a support vehicle for divorced moms for me, and became a relocation resource dedicated to helping moms who, like me, want to confidently move their families abroad from the U.S. Everyone kept asking me, “How did you do it?!” So, here we are! 🙂

After successfully relocating to Spain with my two daughters, I experienced every step of the journey firsthand, from choosing the right visa and finding schools to navigating healthcare, housing, paperwork, and building a sustainable income abroad.

Now, I share all of my research and first-hand experience, and help other families avoid costly mistakes and make their move with clarity and confidence.

Whether you’re just beginning to explore the idea or you’re already planning your relocation, you’ll find practical guides, honest advice, and trusted resources to help you move abroad with confidence, not overwhelm.

Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here.

Cheers to new beginnings!

xoxo,

Violet
